With Clean Sky 2 program, Michelin Aircraft still helps the world to fly

The future of aviation is transforming rapidly, and the industry’s global market must rise to respond sustainably to changing travel needs.

Michelin Aircraft is engaged since 2017 in the program Clean Sky 2, which is part of Horizon 2020, the European Research Program.

WHAT IS CLEAN SKY 2?

The core mission of Clean Sky 2 is to develop breakthrough technologies to significantly increase the environmental performance of aircraft and also aims to contribute to European competitiveness and mobility.

HOW DOES MICHELIN CONTRIBUTE TO THIS PROGRAM?

In the Clean Sky 2 Advanced Landing Gears demonstrator, in partnership with Safran, Michelin studied new technologies and developed innovations, including weight reduction, which is a major stake for aircraft manufacturers and airlines.

In response to this context, Michelin is working on new technologies, in particular a new bead wire technology.

The bead wire, patented WO 2015/014579, is composed of a core in Glass Fiber Composite, associated with high tensile wires, which permit to decrease the weight by 40%. This new technology has the same mechanical resistance for high pressure and thermal resistance for high braking solicitations. Moreover, 70% to 100% of the composite bead wire is recyclable.

USE CASES

Some of Michelin’s new technologies have already been applied on current aircraft programs.

This project has received funding from the Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No CS2-945535-GAM-2020-SYS
